Tips to travel from Europe: Low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air often operate seasonal flights from airports such as Trieste, Venice, or Zagreb to Alghero–Fertilia Airport, located in the heart of Northwest Sardinia.

Alternatively, for those who love a bit of adventure, you can drive to Livorno or Civitavecchia (Italy) and take an overnight ferry to Olbia or Porto Torres. This option is great if you’re traveling with your own car—perfect for exploring Sardinia at your own pace.

Where to Stay on a Budget

The best home base for exploring Northwest Sardinia is the charming city of Alghero. Known for its cobblestone streets, Catalan-Gothic architecture, and vibrant seaside promenade, Alghero offers a wide range of affordable guesthouses, B&Bs, and family-run hotels.

Renting a Car in Sardinia

To truly enjoy Sardinia’s beauty, renting a car is essential. While Alghero has a walkable center, the island’s real treasures—hidden coves, quiet villages, and archaeological sites—are best reached by car.
