Banja Luka – Enjoy beautiful city and amazing nature

Banja Luka, the capital of the Republika Srpska entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is known for its rich history, beautiful nature, and vibrant culture. For a 2-day visit, here’s a well-balanced itinerary that covers the highlights of the city, combining sightseeing, relaxation, and local experiences.

Banja Luka is very affordable, so you can choose it to travel on budget. It is a beautiful city, so put it on you bucket list. Another big advantage is that there is an airport Banja Luka and you will find affordable plane tickets to get there. It also felt very save, I’ve been there as a solo female and felt really safe. So just read this itinerary and go 🙂

Is two days enough to visit Banja Luka?

My answer is yes. The vibrant city is small and if you want to see all the main attractions in Banja Luka, you will make it in one day. Even if you like having coffee or if you like to sit down in a restaurant.

How to go around the city?

Banja Luka is totally walk able. You can take a bus if you are not in the city center. For going outside the city, you can also go by buses, I think it is the cheapest and fastest way to go around.

Where to stay when in Banja Luka?

There is a lot of beautiful and affordable hotels in Banja Luka. I stayed in hotel Zlatna Kruna. It is 15 min from the city center by car. In front of the hotel is a bus station, so you can jump on bus and visit center. In Zlatna Kruna there is also a beautiful restaurant. They serve local food, which is mostly barbecue meat, as their so called cevapi and pleskavice. Those dishes are made from mixed meet and are served with onion and tomato. I encourage you to try it and also to order some kajmak with it.

Day 1: Historical and Cultural Exploration

Kastel Fortress

Start your day by visiting Kastel Fortress, one of the oldest structures in Banja Luka. This fortress, located on the banks of the Vrbas River, dates back to Roman times and offers fantastic views of the river and city. Stroll through the ruins, take in the historical atmosphere, and explore the open-air areas used for various cultural events. There is no entry fee and is open all the time.

If you will come with car, there is a public parking place next to the fortress. You can also visit restaurant in the fortress which is basically on the river. There is a nice atmosphere and some good local food.

 After visiting the fortress, head to the Museum of the Republika Srpska. It offers a comprehensive overview of the region’s history, from prehistoric times to the present day. It’s a great way to understand the cultural and historical significance of Banja Luka and its surrounding region.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

 This Serbian Orthodox cathedral, located in the city center, is one of the most important religious landmarks in Banja Luka. Admire its distinctive architecture and mosaics, and enjoy a peaceful moment inside the church.

For lunch, head to Kazamat, a restaurant near Kastel Fortress, which offers traditional Bosnian dishes with a modern twist. Try ćevapi, burek, or bamija (okra stew), and enjoy a relaxing meal with a view of the fortress.

Best Time to Visit: Spring and early autumn offer the best weather for outdoor activities. However, Banja Luka is beautiful year-round.

Local Markets: If you have time, visit the City Market for fresh produce, local cheeses, and handmade crafts. It is really big market and it can take you even one hour to see it all.
