Lisbon city break – do it now. With you friends, family or as a couple. You will love it!
If you’re looking for a city break that offers breathtaking views, vibrant neighborhoods, and a perfect blend of history and modern culture, Lisbon should be at the top of your list. I recently explored Portugal’s sunny capital with a group of friends and created a 5-day itinerary that’s great not only for adults but also family-friendly. It was an unforgettable experience and Lisbon was more than I expected!

Whether you’re into scenic viewpoints, pastel-colored streets, or grand monuments, this itinerary gives you the best of Lisbon – and even includes a magical day trip to Sintra. Here’s how we spent five memorable days in and around Lisbon.
🗓 Day 1: A Relaxed Start with Panoramic Views
We arrived to Lisbon on Monday. In the morning. Even if you can take a bus to get you from airport to the city center, we took taxi. It was one of my bonuses on Booking.com. The driver waited for us at the airport and took us to our hotel. We choose to stay at Hotel Dublin and it was a really pleasant stay. They will offer you comfy beds, tasty breakfast and beautifully furnished rooms. Even tho we were traveling all night, we went straight to exploring Lisbon.

And first we needed to get umbrellas. Lisbon is located near river Tagus and the Atlantic Ocean. And it can rain a lot. There was 5min rain and than sunshine. And then rain again. But, we were there in March. Temperatures were around 24°C. And umbrellas – you can buy them on street for a few Euros. Lisbon city break can bring you all the weathers in one day.

We kicked things off with a laid-back walk through Lisbon’s elegant green areas and viewpoints:
- Marquês de Pombal – A central starting point and iconic statue that leads into Eduardo VII Park.
- Parque Eduardo VII & Miradouro – Perfect for panoramic views over Lisbon and the River Tagus. Bring your camera!
- Fonte Luminosa – A photogenic fountain surrounded by gardens, ideal for a relaxing stop.
- 3D fun art museum – perfect spot for a rainy day! We’ve had so much fun and I would recommend it to groups of friends, couples and families. There is a small entrance fee, but you will have perfect photos and it is time well spend.

Tip: Wear comfy shoes – Lisbon is hilly, and you’ll walk a lot.
🗓 Day 2: Classic Lisbon city break – History, Tiles & Trendy Streets
This day was one of my favorites. It is a real Lisbon city break. So much history, scenery views, all those tiles – on buildings and on the floor. If you just have one day in Lisbon, follow the list bellow.

Our second day was packed with Lisbon’s greatest hits – from ancient castles to iconic tiled balconies:

- Rossio Square – Notice the wavy black and white tiles under your feet.
- Rossio Train Station – Admire its stunning Neo-Manueline architecture.
- Castelo de São Jorge – A must-see! Climb up for one of the best views of the city.
- Miradouro de Santa Luzia – Classic Lisbon view, blue tiles and all.
- Lisbon Cathedral – a must see.
- Praça do Comércio – One of the city’s most iconic riverside squares.
- Bairro Alto & Pink Street – Great for photos and a taste of Lisbon nightlife. We were on Pink street in the middle of the day and it was almost empty. Just to let you know if you need great photos!
- Time out market– you can eat there, they have a lot of food choices.
- Get the Bica R.S. Paulo (Elevador da Bica)– it will take you to Chiado district.
- A Brasileira & Chiado – Grab a coffee and enjoy the charming Chiado district.
- Livraria Bertrand – The oldest operating bookstore in the world (since 1732!). Music for my ears 😉
- Carmo Convent – We passed by this hauntingly beautiful Gothic ruin.
- Santa Justa Lift – A beautiful, vintage elevator that links downtown to Bairro Alto.
- Praça Luís de Camões – A lively square, perfect for people-watching.

Tip: Use the metro or a day pass for public transport – many spots are far apart.
🗓 Day 3: A Fairytale Day Trip to Sintra
No Lisbon trip is complete without visiting Sintra – just 40 minutes by train. 4 full days for Lisbon city break is enough so we could spend one day out of the city. You can visit Sintra by train from Rossio station. The train leaves every 30 minutes. Please, be aware that Pena palace is on the hill and there can be chilly and windy.

In Sintra you will have to go to the park. There are all the interesting palaces, including Palácio de Pena. Do not walk. Even if you think it is close, it is more than one hour walk. I would recommend you the hop on hop off bus. I thing it was ScottURB. For 13.5€ you can go on bus to every palace in park.
- Palácio da Pena – Straight out of a Disney movie! Bright colors, romantic towers, and stunning views await.
We spent most of the day exploring the palace grounds, taking photos, and enjoying the whimsical architecture.

Tip: Buy tickets to Palácio da Pena online in advance to skip the lines. You will only be able to go inside the palace at time, listed on ticket. And pack snacks – options are limited inside the park.
🗓 Day 4: Lisbon’s Trendy Side & Riverside Charm
We explored a different side of Lisbon on day four – a mix of tradition, trend and relaxation. Lisbon city break is all that.

- Belém Tower – A historic symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. Great photo spot!
- Jerónimos Monastery – A grand building with lovely gardens between the monastery and the river. This really is an stunning monastery. We did not go inside, but I will definitely visit it the next time I will be in Lisbon.
- LX Factory – An old industrial space turned into a trendy hub with boutiques, cafés and street art.
- Green Street – A fun, artsy pedestrian street worth a stroll.
- Boat ride – We took a relaxing boat ride along the Tagus River – a great way to cool down. You can make reservation via Booking.com and it is a must. You will see some monuments, like the red bridge Ponte de Abril and Sanctuary of Christ the King.
- Estrela Basilica – A beautiful baroque church with a peaceful garden nearby. Check the opening hours of upper terrace, because there are some stunning views. The entrance if free and it is a really beautiful Basilica.

Tip: Belém can get very busy – go early if you want photos without crowds. Don’t skip the famous Pastéis de Belém pastries!
🗓 Day 5: Slow Morning & A Touch of Nature
On our final day of our Lisbon city break, we kept things slow and spontaneous:

- Estufa Fria – We loved it so much! It is an amazing walk through its calming greenery. I surely is a hidden gem of Lisbon. There is a small entrace fee (4€) and it is totally worth it!
- City wandering – We strolled through central Lisbon, stopped for pastries, and did some souvenir shopping.
Tip: This is a great day to revisit your favorite places or discover hidden alleys in Alfama.
